How to dictate into ChatGPT and other AI chats
People type about 40 words a minute and talk at 150. If you spend your day explaining things to an AI, that gap is most of your day.
Why this is the thing I made it for
I built games with AI, and that meant a lot of explaining what I wanted. I type slowly and talk fast, so I used dictation apps on their free trials until they ran out, then built my own. Most of what I say into murmrrr still goes into a chat box.
How to do it
- Open the chat in whatever you normally use: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot in a browser, or their desktop apps. murmrrr types into any text box, so it doesn't matter which.
- Click in the message box.
- Hold the hotkey (Ctrl+Win on Windows, Ctrl+Option on a Mac), say your whole prompt, and let go. Talk normally; the ums disappear, pauses become full stops, and "at three, no, four" comes out as four.
- Read it, then press Enter.
A long prompt is one press. If you'd rather dictate it in parts, let go and hold again; the next piece goes on the end.
Things that help with AI prompts in particular
- Lists come out as lists. "Three things: first, keep it short, second, use British spelling, third, no bullet points" lays out as three lines.
- Names it keeps getting wrong go under Your words: say the phrase, it types what you taught it. Useful for product names, file names and your own jargon.
- Code editors and terminals work too: it types where the cursor is, so it works in Cursor, VS Code and a terminal, not just the browser.
- Your prompts stay private. The AI sees what you send it, but your voice never goes anywhere: speech becomes text on your own computer. What you say to a chat shouldn't pass through a second company on the way.
